Thought #1: Calling all scientists - Light "em" up! This could be a case of micro-fiberoptics with a crystaline transmitter system. Testing would require a small enough wet tube, however, to even start an experiment. If it did prove to be true that it is a fiberoptics of sort transmissions could be interupted rather easily.

Thought #2: Last, but not least -- When human ears are grown on mice it would create a cartilage type substance. Could there be a connection between these two processes?
