So, what is a sign?

sign- n.
1) something that indicates a fact, quality, etc., indication, token
2) a gesture or motion that convey's information, gives a command, etc.
3) a mark or a symbol having an accepted and specific meaning
4) any linguistic unit as a word, letter, etc., that is a symbol of an idea, function, etc.
5) a publicaly displayed board, playcard, etc., bearing information, warning, etc.
